What is Mochi?

Before diving into Trader Joe's mochi offering, let's take a moment to understand this popular treat. Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made from glutinous rice flour, or mochiko. Unlike regular rice cakes, mochi has a soft, chewy texture and a mild, sweet flavor. It's traditionally pounded into a paste and then formed into various shapes. Mochi can be enjoyed plain or filled with an array of ingredients like sweet bean paste (an), fresh fruit, ice cream, or savory fillings.

Mochi at Trader Joe's

Trader Joe's just released this new Brown Sugar Boba Mochi, proclaiming that it delivers on all the "distinctive flavors and textures of Boba," but without the need for a straw! That's because each package is individually sealed and ready for your enjoyment right out of the bag.

So, how does the Brown Sugar Boba Mochi from Trader Joe's taste? In our tests, we found this snack to be super-enjoyable and a really pleasant texture. The sweetness was balanced without being overly sweet, and the brown sugar flavor was distinct and what you'd expect of the flavor.

Trader Joe's sources this product from a Taiwanese supplier that, according to their website, "knows well the ways of Boba, which originated in their country circa the 1980s." That may be why this is one of the more authentic Boba treats we've tasted out of a grocery store package.

How to Eat Trader Joe's Mochi

We found this mochi to be best enjoyed fresh and at room temperature. Simply take them out of the freezer and let them thaw for a few minutes before indulging.

Can't wait for them to thaw? That's totally fine! We also love eating these straight out of the bag, and honestly thought they were just fine even if they were still frozen. The texture of the frozen outer shell was a pleasant treat, especially on a hot day.
